prohibition:
In 1920, the United States government passed the 18th amendment to the constitution. The 18th ammendment was a law of prohibition of alcohol. During prohibition, the drinking, trading, selling, or making of alcohol was prohibited. Those who broke the law were called bootleggers. The alcohol trade was an underground business at small bars or speakeasies which came from the term,"speak easy", used by bartenders. The term meant for the customers to talk normally to not bring any attention to the order of alcohol. With prohibition, alcohol was smuggled mainly through Canada via Great Lakes or over the border on land. Legal and illegal home brewing was popular through the trade of alcohol. Prohibition wasn't very succesful. Many politicians drank during prohibition as well as the President Harding who kept a cellar fully stocked with many different kinds of alcohol to keep him occupied during the time.
